Priority Management: Control Your Time

Post by CEO Daniel Harkavy on Aug 19, 2015

“I can’t do it all. I can’t be it all. I’m crazed!” Have you ever heard anything like that? You don’t have to listen very long to realize it’s become the mantra of this generation. Most of us feel overwhelmed. There’s just so much to do. Over and over again comes the same frustrated question: “How do I fit it all in?”

“Fitting it all in” is the work of Priority Management. And managing your priorities is really all about decision management. In fact, it’s less about managing your calendar than it is about managing your decisions. By learning to do this well, you’ll have a leg up on most of your competitors, because you’ll be putting onto your calendar what’s truly most important to you.

When Building Champions takes a call from a prospective client, nine times out of ten the caller wants our help with ordering his or her day. The person on the phone wants to begin our coaching relationship with emergency assistance on filling a calendar with the right activities.

We coach based on the Core Four model—and Priority Management is the fourth piece of that model. It basically takes key elements from the early parts of your Core Four and brings order to them. That’s why we can’t start with Priority Management. If we try to help you manage your daily routine without first knowing what’s most important to you, more than likely we’ll fill your calendar with the wrong activities.

Until you’ve completed your Business Vision, we can’t help you to create an effective Business Plan. Too many leaders forget this and so build plans that don’t lead to anything of significance.

Who do you want to be five, ten, even twenty years down the road? That’s the question the Life Plan is designed to answer. That’s why we start off with life planning, move to vision, then work on business planning, and only then end with Priority Management. It just doesn’t work well any other way.

We are offering a free chapter of my book, Becoming A Coaching Leader. If you don’t schedule your priorities, everyone else around you will. If you don’t take charge of your schedule, then your teammates, the people in your community, friends or relatives will fill your days for you.

If you don’t identify your top priorities and schedule your day around them, then you’ll always find yourself, at the end of the day, using leftover space to cram in what you consider important. And you know the worst thing of all? That’s usually exhaustion time.

Download the chapter and learn how to:

  • Schedule Your Day
  • Know Your Hourly Wage
  • Identify Your High Payoff Activities
  • Time Block
  • Build Your Perfect Week

Just a few minutes today could save you hours of headache in the days and weeks to come. Practical and actionable, my book is about focusing on the right things so you can excel even more. In essence, that’s what Priority Management is all about. It’s about doing the right things at the right time. It’s about moving from reactive to proactive, from unfocused to focused, from unclear to clarity, from living out someone else’s priorities to living out your own, and from being driven by circumstances to being directed by goals.
